US Ambassador Jeff Hovenier, in an interview for “Radio KiM”, has said that attitudes related to this regulation of cash are publicly spoken and that the US demand is for Kosovo to postpone implementation of the regulation until satisfactory procedures are established and in line with European standards.
In this interview, Havenier has said that during the past week there have been numerous conversations with the Government of Kosovo at all levels. He has discovered that Kurti has also been called by Assistant Secretary for Europe and Eurasia, for which there has been no announcement from Prime Minister or Prime Minister Albin Kurti himself. Not even O'Brien himself has announced this.
“Last week, I've spoken publicly many times about the changed rule of the Central Bank of Kosovo (BQK) for cash operations. We have had numerous conversations with the Government of Kosovo at all levels, including calls between Assistant Secretary for Europe and Eurasia, Jim O'Brien and Prime Minister Kurti. Our request remains for Kosovo to postpone implementation of the CEC regulations until satisfactory procedures are established in line with European standards, and until there is a clear way for people to take their customs and payments, and until the population is sufficiently informed of the way of distribution. Their benefits will continue”, Havenier told Radio “KiM”, report Express.
The US diplomat has said that the US respects the right of the CEC to regulate the financial sector, however, adds that the issue in question is highly sensitive and directly influenced how Kosovo citizens measure financial support from Serbia.
Therefore, we want to see Government and the Central Bank exercise great sensitivity and care in the way they do this, considering the impact this change will have on some of the most vulnerable citizens of Kosovo”, Havener said.
