About 57 thousand Kosovars have given up their citizenship from early 2008 until the end of 2023. This has been made known to Radio Kosovo officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs. According to the MPB, the main reason for freedom from citizenship is the failure of two citizenships in different states, primarily the EU.
Applications for freedom of citizenship are continuing even this year, while the number of Kosovars who have been released from citizenship is digestive. This has been announced by Interior Ministry spokeswoman Nora Fetosti, who points to the number of citizens who gave up or even earned Kosovo citizenship on January 1st of last year.
“From January 1st until February 12th 2024, from the citizenship of the Republic of Kosovo, 329 people have been released. During this period of citizenship, 61 have won it. And throughout the year 2023, 3 thousand and 98 persons have been released from citizenship, while the citizenship of the Republic of Kosovo has won 708 persons”, she said.
From 2008 to the end of 2023, 57 thousand and 155 people have been released from Kosovo's citizenship, Fethoshi said, adding that for the same period of time citizenship has won 3 thousand and 568 people.
Meanwhile, MPB spokeswoman told Radio Kosovo the main reasons for pushing Kosovars to seek freedom from citizenship.
“Arsyet is giving up the citizenship of the Republic of Kosovo, as many European Union states do not allow two citizenships, including some states that are not part of the European Union. Given that a large number of our citizens have been living for years in these states and a large number have also been born in these countries, and as a result, they have acquired the right to obtain citizenship and are obliged to be freed from previous citizenship, if they want to gain the citizenship of that country”, Fetos said.
Referring to census data in Kosovo, 2011, the number of 57 thousand and 155 people who have renounced Kosovo citizenship is about 7 thousand larger than the total population in the three municipalities in Ferizaj region: Kacanic, Hani of Elez, and Shtrpce, together with about 50,000 inhabitants.
