Ambassador of the United States to Kosovo Jeffrey Hovenier has reminded former US President Bill Clinton of the US President's Day note at “Bill Clinton” Square in Pristina.
In September of Clinton, Hüvenier spoke of the US “strong attachment to the people of Kosovo”, which, as the ambassador said, “is so clearly celebrated from the September of President Clinton”.
I am truly honored and on behalf of the United States I can say that we are all collectively, truly honored that President Osmani and her team have led efforts to ensure that today, on this day, the President's Day, we pay tribute to all American presidents and we pay special honor to President Clinton. Thank you, President Osmani, for honoring our party. We appreciate”, Houvenier said first, and his words were followed by a applause.
Hüvenier said Clinton had a personal commitment to Kosovo and its people, while quoting some of his words.
Now, I believe this initiative, even though it is a global phenomenon, is special here in Kosovo. Last year I quoted President Clinton and I hope you will forgive me if I do it again because I think his words are so important to underline his personal commitment to this country and the people of Kosovo. In 2019, when President Clinton visited Kosovo, he said, quote: I will always be proud of the fact that I happened to be president of the United States when they needed someone to stand up and say no more ethnic cleansing, no more people fleeing their homes, no more killing innocent civilians. There's got to be a different way of doing”.
Hovenier also recalled that Clinton had been in Pristina for opening his September in the square, which also bears his name.
“Sic knows many of you, in 2009, President Clinton was here, probably right where I'm standing, for the inauguration of this September. And at that point, he said, quote: I am deeply grateful that I had the opportunity to be part of the end of the terrible things that were happening 10 years ago and give you a chance to build a better future for yourself”.
US Ambassador stressed that the United States' “dedication to the people of Kosovo precedes President Clinton” and that it has continued after him. And I can tell you myself about the things I've seen with President Bush and President Obama and President Biden... and President Trump”.
But Clinton singled out, saying that “ai showed extraordinary leadership and courage” in supporting that the people of Kosovo have their own destiny, “instead of having elections imposed by others”.
Thank you all for joining us today. Thank you for letting us share our president with you. Because I think many of you say he is our president. I couldn't say otherwise. And thank you on behalf of the United States of America”, Havenier said last.
