TickTok, under the EU path: The platform does not respect young people's protection
Since last summer, Chinese entrepreneurship TikTok and other major internet platforms have to respect the EU law on digital services (DSA). Since two months ago, the EU Commission as the authority responsible for monitoring expressed doubts about major Internet concessions and that TikTok does not respect these highly rigorous standards, compared at the international level. Preliminary investigations have already begun, and TikTok was positioned. But in the EU Commission's opinion, TikTok's explanations have been insufficient.
The EU commissioner, Thierry Breton, accuses TikTok, that he does not respect young people's protection enough. Young people under 16 will need to be able to use TikTok only with limitations. Young people and children under 13 should be allowed to use only a limited version. The quality of age is insufficient, because TikTok, when it opens accounts on it, bases the question of age on self-recognition, without asking relevant verifications. But this is not just a specific TiTok problem and other Meta concert media, X or pornography sites act alike. TickTok admits to his page, that it's up to the honest of users.
To customers under 16, the service limits the length of daily use to one hour. But this restriction can be abolished with only a few clicks. EU law for digital services (DAS) prohibits custom advertising for people under 16. Even this is difficult to respect when age verification is lacking, EU Commission supporters think.
The EU Commission also expresses concern that TikTok's algorithm imposes on users an endless flow of videos, following all their personal preferences. This “perceive” on the application can be turned into an uncontrollable addiction to the TikTok extensions. TickTok rejects this, saying that the algorithm is consistent with DSA norms and can be deactivated. But the option of deactivation on the application menu is hidden and can be reached after many clicks. This regulator and options that are difficult to detect are a problem not only of TikTok. Media researchers, who have long found, that TikTok, used intensively by youths under 25 years of age, has great potential to turn into habit to users. “There are many aspects that give rise to belief that a specific design of TikTok and other platforms can stimulate addiction to the app”, internet expert Julian Jarrich from the foundation “The new accountability” said on television. “The gathering of evidence, to prove that this is true or not, is not an easy task for the EU Commission. ”
A TikTok spokesman explained that the firm, which belongs to the Chinese Concertance concert, will further commit to improving youth protection. “We will work further with experts and industry to better conceive TikTok. We rejoice in the opportunity now, to be able to explain this in detail to the EU Commission.” The EU Commission wants, in addition to protecting young people, to receive a list of all advertising clients. It should also be guaranteed for researchers access to TikTok's data, as defined in the Law on Digital Services.
