European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell pledged that Russian President Vladimir Putin will be held responsible for the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navlany.
He made comments after a meeting he held in Brussels with his widow, Yulia Navalnaya.
Navajo's death in an Arctic prison last week shocked Russia's exiled opposition, which, like the West, pointed to the Kremlin's finger of guilt.
“We expressed the EU's deepest condolences to Yulia Navalnayas. Vladimir Putin and his regime will bear responsibility for the death of Alexei Navallyt”, Borrell wrote on the X platform.
“Sic said Yulia as well, Putin is not Russia. Russia is not Putin. We will continue our support for Russia's civil society and independent media”, he added.
Navajo addressed EU foreign ministers in Brussels after pledging that she would continue her husband's fight against Putin's harsh control over Russia.
EU ministers discussed options to trigger new Kremlin costs, following the death of Navajo.
The EU has already imposed sanctions on Moscow, including Putin, due to Ukraine's invasion.
But, Borrell said he expects EU member states to propose new sanctions on those directly responsible for the treatment of Navajo, including Russia's prison system.
He, as well, said Brussels would re-name the blacklist of global human rights sanctions according to Navajo.
The Kremlin denied that it was in the death of Navajo. / REL
