Donald Trump wins Nevada Republican elections

Former President Donald Trump won the Nevada Republican elections on Thursday, while he was the only candidate to run. This is the third state he wins, while trying to secure the party's appointment for the November presidential elections. In Nevada, the Republican Party organised two sets of elections -- those by vote through balloting -- that were held Tuesday, and yesterday's elections -- that were held by an open vote. Only the results of yesterday's race, according to party rules, apply to party delegates.

Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, Mr. Trump's last rival, who is still in the race, did not participate in yesterday's race. Mrs. Haley cited what she praised as an unfair process that favored former President Trump. Instead, she participated in the polls that were held Tuesday, where Mr. Trump did not participate. Mrs. Haley, however, did not win those elections either, as most voters on the ballot sheet marked the statement writing “neither of the candidates”.

With the victory secured Thursday, former President Trump won all 26 state delegates. It must collect 1215 delegates to officially win the party's appointment. He could reach that number in March.

From Nevada, the Republican race continues with preliminary elections in South Carolina on February 24th, in the state of Mrs. Haley. Former President Trump remains popular in the deeply conservative state, but Mrs. Haley, who has previously won two elections for governor of this state, hopes that its local roots give her an advantage. Mr. Trump already hosts a massive collection of delegates during the March 5th events, the day the preliminary elections are held in 16 states at once.

Former President Trump, giving a brief speech after his victory in Las Vegas, gladly spoke out for the long ranks of voters in the western state and told supporters that he was eager to declare victory in the upcoming South Carolina elections.

“We are ahead of all”, he said. “Is there any way to announce the election results for next Tuesday? That's all I want. ”

Mr. Trump's supporters waited in long lines Thursday. At one polling site, at an elementary school in the city of Reno, nearly 1,000 people were in line in the first minutes when the polling station opened.

Voters in line, some of whom wore hats and shirts showing they were Mr. Trump's supporters, said they went out to support the former president in a race that would give him the third consecutive victory in the Republican presidential race.

Donald Trump has long been extremely popular among the Republicans of Nevada, but he had other advantages among the party's main figures. The leader of the Party in Nevada, Michael McDonald and the official from the republican National State Committee, Jim DeGraffenreid, were among the six Nevada republics charged with sending false certificates to Congress claiming Mr. Trump won Nevada in the 2020 presidential election.

Republicans are increasing support for Mr. Trump as he faces a host of legal problems, including 91 criminal charges in four separate cases. Support for it is also increasing in Congress, where the Republicans rejected a border security agreement after it rejected it. His influence is also clear on the Republican National Committee, as Chairman Ronna McDaniel may resign in the coming weeks, as Mr. Trump publicly criticised her, expressing doubts about whether she should remain in office.

Former President Trump still faces an unprecedented risk for an important candidate. An appeals court ruled this week that he could face trial on charges that he has made efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 elections, thereby undermining his claims that he enjoys immunity from prosecution. The US Supreme Court on Thursday heard arguments in another case involving the removal of Mr. Trump from the ballot in Colorado's preliminary elections, under suspicion that he had made attempts to overturn his defeat in the 2020 elections. The members of the Supreme Court, judged by the questions asked to representatives of the two pearls, were widely sceptical of the argument that it should be removed from the ballot. / VOA
