Diplomatic sources in Washington told Top Channel journalist Muhamed Veliu that it is working on finalising the details of this visit -- the first for Blinken in Albania since 2021 when he took the lead in American diplomacy.
The primary goal of this visit is not known at the moment, but is suggested to come as an American assessment of Albania as a US ally and NATO.
Last year, Secretary Blinken commented with positive high marks on Albania's role in the UN Security Council.
It was US Secretary of State Antony Blinken himself, who in May 2021 declared Sali Berisha as a person “Non Grata” from the US for corruption and the undermine of democracy. This was accompanied by a frontal attack by Berisha at Blinken's address.
Secretary Blinken has also been active through messages for de-escalic of the tense situation in northern Kosovo last September.
History of American Secretarys of State of Albania
The first visit by an American secretary of state to our country was that of James Baker to Tirana on 22 June 1991.
While the second visit by another US secretary of state was that of Madeleine Albright, on February 19, 2000, where she also delivered a word to the Albanian parliament. Following another visit by Collin Pwell Secretary of State September 25th 2003. In 2012, Hillary Clinton was secretary of state on a one-day visit to Tirana.
The next secretary of State to visit our country was John Kerry, on February 14, 2016.
