Court rules against former President Trump, fine of $3356 million

A judge in New York decided on Friday against former President Donald Trump, having fined $364m for what the judge called a multi-year scheme to deceive banks and others, through financial statements that artificially fanned the value of former president's property. Judge Arthur Engoron ruled after the trial. [...]
Judge Arthur Engoron handed the verdict after the trial that lasted two and a half months, during which the republic's main candidate for president testified that he has become the victim of a manipulated legal system.
The harsh penalty is a victory for the New York prosecutor, Lettia James, who was elected by the Democrats, who filed charges against former President Trump for what he called not just harmless boasting but years of deceptive practices, as he added the collection of high buildings, golf courses and other property in many parts of the world, which helped him gain fame and continue the White House.
Mr. Trump's lawyers had said before making the decision they would appeal to him.
The decision is expected to play an important role in a busy and important week for the former president's upcoming judicial calendar.
Prosecutor James had demanded fines of $370 million and the ban on Mr. Trump and other persons to do business in New York State.
Some 40 witnesses were questioned during the trial, including Mr. Trump himself. The concluding arguments were made on January 11th. The process was led by a single judge, as court judges are not allowed in this state for such indictments, and neither the prosecutor's office nor defence lawyers sought the jury. / VOA
