The European Parliament voted in a resolution demanding an international investigation into irregularities during elections held last December in Serbia, as well as suspension of European funds, if proven authorities were directly involved in voter fraud. For the European Parliament resolution on the situation in Serbia after the elections, 461 Eurodeputs voted, against 53 and abstained 43.
Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia Chairman Sonja Biserko, in a statement to the Montenegrin medium “Antena M” said the adoption of the resolution was expected, due to everything that happened during parliamentary and local elections in Serbia.
That resolution was expected, very much spoke. Since the EU criticised the way elections were held in December at all levels, I would say that Germany stood out in particular, but that the European Parliament had an interesting discussion and that a harsh resolution was expected, what the resolution says is that elections should be repeated in Belgrade, a commission to investigate all irregularities and, of course, seek negotiations between the government and the opposition, which would be a way of overcoming this” situation, Biserko explains.
Commenting on Belgrade's official reaction -- primarily Prime Minister Ana Brnabiq -- that the resolution is not binding, Biserko claims otherwise that the resolution is both morally and politically binding.
It's morally and politically so binding! Second, all governments, except for Hungarian and possibly Slovak, support and pressure in this direction”, Biserko adds.
She stressed that Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, is under pressure, especially because of the attack on Banjska, but also because of Russia's exposed influence in parts of the government in Serbia.
“Personally Vuciq is under great pressure not only because of elections, but above all because of Banjska, as it was a security risk for the entire region, but also for Europe, to which the West reacted immediately. The report, released by the Government of Kosovo, which is very detailed and very convincing. On the other hand, you have Russia praising Serbia, all that Belgrade would like to hide or not, in any case Russia's presence, which obviously has a strong impact, is exposed in some structures in this country”.
Biserko does not expect Vuciq to react at this moment to the EP Resolution's stance on elections and Kosovo, because, as he says, he is awaiting American and European elections.
His location will be determined the way things work. It will take a while because he will certainly not make decisions now and soon”, Sonja Biserko said.
