US President Joe Biden said Congress would be guilty of “roughly criminal neglect” if it did not pass funds for Ukraine and thanked German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for his leadership Friday in securing German military aid to Kiev.
Scholz, who was in Washington to give his support to Biden's efforts to receive funds for Ukraine, met with the president at the White House to discuss Russia's fight with its smaller neighbour, as well as the crisis in the Middle East.
Speaking to reporters before the meeting, Scholz said he was encouraged by the US Senate's move Thursday to advance a $99.34 billion bill (over 86 billion euros) involving aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan after the republics blocked compromise legislation that had included reforms in immigration policy.
The White House has issued warnings for months that a failure by lawmakers to offer aid to Kiev would damage its ability to fight Russia two years after the invasion of Ukraine by Moscow.
If that happens, not to support Ukraine is close to criminal neglect. It's scandalous”, Beden said at the Oval Office, in front of a burning fire, where the German Chancellor was sitting next to him.
I am very happy that in Europe we now made decisions to get the necessary financial support for the” budget, Scholz said, speaking in English.
“also that Germany was willing to increase its support with sending weapons. And we hope Congress, the Chamber, will follow you and make a decision to provide the necessary support to”, he added.
