David Kanin, professor of European Studies at Johns Hopkins University in the US, says Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti's actions, but “help Serbia” and “are all making everyone forget about Banjska”.
Kanin refers to the decision banning the use of the Serbian dinar in Kosovo, as well as to the establishment of Albanian mayors in majority Serb municipalities in northern Kosovo.
The American people don't want Kurt to do things that drive trouble in a region, that the West wants really quiet, while dealing with everything else happening in the world”, Kanin says.
A day earlier, US Assistant Secretary of State James O'Brien said the Kosovo government is risking partnership with the United States with its decision not to allow the use of the Serbian dinar.
Kanin says this “means a lot, since the US is the guardian of Kosovo”.
It does not rule out the possibility of sanctions, but stresses that the US “will not go that far and, simply, sever its relationship with Kosovo”.
Kanin says Kosovo would have to postpone as much as possible implementing the decision on the dinar, or completely revote it. / REL
