Turkey must quickly build homes for millions of people who were homeless after the devastating earthquake last year, a United Nations official said.
“has a large portion of the population that needs housing. Home is being built there, but it's not enough”, Louisa Winton, the permanent representative of the UN Development Programme, told the Dpa agency.
The UN estimates that two powerful earthquakes last February have left at least 3.3 million citizens homeless in southeast Turkey.
Proper housing and supporting the living of local residents are two urgent needs a year after devastating earthquakes, Vinton said.
Some people still live in tents or in the courts of their damaged homes have placed tents, she stressed.
“We will bring the remaining citizens whose houses were destroyed or uninhabitable, to safe houses”, Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan said on Tuesday.
Erdogan had promised that nearly 300,000 residential buildings would be built for survivors of the earthquake within a year after the earth's powerful quakes.
However, his government has failed to meet that goal and now aims to build 200,000 residential units by the end of 2024.
Earlier Tuesday, angry residents of the earthquake-hit province, Hatay, protested against government and local officials who participated in events organised for an earthquake anniversary.
Many have complained about, as they have said, the government's slow response to remove the ruins and build new homes.
U n The NDP, according to Vinton, has allocated $10m in grants to individual businesses in 11 Turkish provinces, which were affected by earthquakes.
The 7.7-degree earthquake hit Turkey's southeast on the morning of February 6th, followed by another 7.6-degree earthquake the same day.
Of these earthquakes, over 60,000 people were killed in Turkey and neighbouring Syria, according to official data and monitoring group data. / REL
