They have already occupied the key cities of Alepos in the north and Hama in the centre, giving successive devastating blows to President Bashar al-Assad, nearly 14 years after the protests against him erupted across Syria.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a U.K.-based war monitor, said thousands of people were starting to leave on Thursday evening towards the western coastal regions of Syria, a government bastion, writes The Guardian, broadcasting Express.
According to Reuters, a resident of the coastal area said thousands of people had started arriving there from Homs, fearing the rebel's rapid progress.
On Friday morning, Israeli air strikes hit two border points between Lebanon and Syria, said Lebanon Transport Minister Ali Hamieh.
The Syrian state news agency Sana said the Arida border crossing with Lebanon was out of service due to the attack. The Israeli military said it had attacked weapons transfer centres and infrastructure at night on the Syrian side of the Lebanese border, saying these roads were used by Lebanese armed group Hezbollah to smuggle weapons.
