Police commissioner Jessica Tisch described Sunday's incident as “either of the worst crimes one could commit against another human being, reports the BBC.
She said that the woman was on a stopping train when she was approached by a man who used a match to set her clothes on fire.
The victim died at the scene, the police official added, announcing that the suspect had been arrested after a tip provided by a group of high school students after he had used the subway later Sunday.
