The ship with alleged toxic waste docks in Durres, where content will be controlled

A ship, which allegedly carries a large quantity of dangerous waste, was docked Friday at Albania's main port, where prosecutors have ordered its contents to be controlled and tested. The Turkish flagship Moliva XA443A was kept in a harbor about 1.5 kilometers from the port of Durres until [...]

The Turkish flagship Moliva XA443A was held in a harbor about 1.5km from the port of Durres, until authorities found a space in the port for the deployment of its containers, port officials and the prosecutor's office said.

The containers are expected to be sent to an agency in Porto Romano, about six miles [6 km] away.

Ten days ago, prosecutors ordered containers to be confiscated and stored “in a secure” spot for monitoring.

The prosecutor's office has asked various institutions to conduct various lab tests for material containing containers.

Doubts of dangerous remains on this ship, which was launched by Albania towards Thailand, initially established the Basil Action Network (BAN). Jim Puckett, head of BAN, told reporters in Durres on October 28th that there are “2.102 tonnes of dangerous waste”.

There have been many contractive statements for this shipment. Some say that there are no dangerous remains, while we say we are 95 percent sure that there are”, Puckett said.

These remains, considered dangerous, are believed to have been created during technological processes from the activities of the Turkish company Kourm International, in the area of the former metallural national community in Elbasan.

On 21 August, the Durres Prosecutor, along with the European Office against Economic Deception (OLAF), launched the investigation.

Albania's government has said several times that news of “transferring dangerous waste” is just “almude”.

Albania's own prime minister, Edi Rama, had said that dangerous waste has not been transported from Albania to Thailand or China.

“In both controversial transportation cases, from Elbasan to Thailand and from Kosovo to China, goods declared to be oxidide/hythroxide iron or lynx concents, have been transported from the Durres Port to European ports through unequivocal international lines, and have not become search objects in European Union countries where they have been temporarily banned and stored, but are allowed to follow their path”, the Albanian government said in September.

She claimed that economic operators in Albania and Kosovo are responsible for containers, not specifically mentioning someone by name.

The opposition, on the other hand, claims that the company “Kurum International” violated the law on the way to processing dangerous waste that produces, while the company “Sokolaj” has violated the law regarding the transport of dangerous toxic waste. REL
