How many work permits will Switzerland give in 2025?

As every year, Swiss authorities credit a certain number of work permits, known as ʹkuotaʹ for non-commercials EU/ EFTA. How many are assigned for 2025? Unlike their counterparts from the European Union and EFTA (Norwegia, Iceland and Liechtenstein), people from third countries do not have an unlimited access to the Swiss labour market.

They must meet a certain number of requirements before being allowed to work in Switzerland, the main one of them is to have specialised skills that are not found among Swiss or EU citizens/ EFTA, broadcast albinfo.ch.

And even then, citizens of third countries can come to Switzerland only if there are sufficient quotas available for a certain year.

How many at 2025?

Given the lack of labour force affecting certain sectors, Switzerland will hold the same number of permits for citizens of third countries as in previous years, the Federal Council said.

This means that up to 8,500 qualified workers from outside the EU and EFTA can qualify to obtain a Swiss work permit: 4,500 residence permits B and 4,000 short-term L.

Moreover, as has happened in the past four years, a special quota will be assigned to the citizens of the United Kingdom yet2100 B and 1400 L permits.

Why do British citizens have a special quota?

On January 1st, 2021, people from Great Britain are no longer considered EU citizens and subject to the same rules as other citizens of third nations.

In other words, they will be admitted to work here provided this is in Switzerland's overall economic interest”, according to the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM).

Swiss authorities say this system will not continue forever: In a medium-term period, Switzerland will include British citizens in the third-nation general group, though there is no indication when that will happen.

However, this does not apply to British citizens who had moved to Switzerland before the end of the Brex transition period (December 31st 2020) they will preserve all their existing rights for attitude and employment.

Are all quotas consumed each year?

No, only one piece has been distributed. Although Switzerland is an attractive place for employment due to high wages and quality of life, in recent years quotas for third-nation citizens have not been fully used.

In 2023, for example, only 78 percent of available work permits were attributed by “pisina” total and only 24 percent of the United Kingdom.

The same will be the case in 2024, according to official figures.

One reason, according to Samuel Wies, a spokesperson for the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), is that “the acceptance of citizens of third countries depends on the needs of economy and employers”.

Therefore, the subx0 system for accepting citizens of third countries into the Swiss labour market is driven by demand... Most of Switzerland's demands for skilled workers and workers are covered by domestic workers and those from EU states/ EFTA.”

Furthermore, a number of applicants do not meet the criteria of eligibility for permission from the candidates' professional qualifications to the insufficient contribution they would make to Switzerland's “overall economic interest”.
