Greek police found 36 people alive on the northern part of the island of Samos. Meanwhile, three others who were trapped in a quay on the island were rescued by coast guard officers.
Avian and ship helped search and rescue immigrants, the coast guard said.
According to a Coast Guard officer, authorities were notified of the incident by a nongovernmental organisation and estimate that about 50 people were aboard the boat that brought them to Samos.
Greece, which extends to the Southeast corner of the European Union, is the preferred gateway to European entry for immigrants and refugees from the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
More than a million were passed on to immigrants and refugees to the eastern islands of Greece by Turkey in 2015 and 2016. Many drowned in an effort to make such a dangerous journey by ship.
Their number fell later, but it began to grow again last year.
About 54,000 immigrants have reached Greece so far, which is the second highest in southern Europe after Italy. The vast majority of them arrived by ship, according to data from the United Nations refugee agency, U n NFCR. / REL/
