“President Erdogan has stated that he is aiming to boost co-operation between Turkey and Russia in several ways, including expanding trade volume”, the Turkish Presidency has said through a statement.
Although it has been quick to condemn Russia's war in Ukraine, Turkey takes a neutral stance on this war, and has not followed Western politics for imposing sanctions against Moscow.
Erdogan has justified politics due to Turkey's dependence on Russian oil and gas.
Five Turkish companies were targeted with US sanctions in September 2023 for supplying equipment to several Russian companies in the field of defence.
In a letter sent in August 2022, the US Treasury Department warned Turkish companies of increased “risk” as “Russia attempts to exploit” Turkey for “escaped sanctions”.
The war in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022.
