Discussions on appointment of elected President Trump

Some of the candidates for US President-elect Donald Trump's cabinet are being named as inappropriate “candidate” in democratic and republican circles.

As U.S. Voice correspondent Veronica Balderas Iglesias, Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson reminded critics Sunday that the American people voted, as he put it, “to shake up the status quo at” and that this is the task the new officials will be tasked with, if confirmed.

President-elect Donald Trump continued his cabinet's completion over the weekend, naming Chris Wrist, a supporter of the oil and gas industry, for the post of energy secretary.

Mr. Trump has given priority to loyal allies for key cabinet posts.

One of the most controversial appointments is that of former Republican lawmaker Matt Gaetz for the UN Attorney General's post (comparable position with that of the Secretary of Justice).

Before he resigned last week, an Ethical Commission of the House of Representatives was on the verge of completing his investigation into charges of sexual abuse and illegal drug use. Mr. Gaetz denies the charges.

Democrat lawmaker Adam Schif told CNN that, according to him, Mr. Gaetz is not qualified to serve in the proposed role.

The minority leader in the House of Representatives, Democrat lawmaker Hakeem Jeffries, spoke on the NBC network on Sunday.

He cast doubt on Mr. Trump's election of his cabinet, some of which, he said, have no experience for the tasks that have been proposed.

Is this the best America can offer at a moment like this, when we are facing so many challenges? Of course not”, he said.

Voted for Donald Trump, the American people gave the Republicans the mandate to change the state of the country, Republican head of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson stressed.

Each president has the right to appoint his own cabinet, to appoint who he thinks will meet his programme. People on this list will do this. They will go to agencies that will lead and reform them”, Mr. Johnon said.

Most names selected by Mr. Trump are expected to receive the Senate's quick approval.

The president-elect has also called on republican Senate leaders to allow him to make appointments even while the Senate is on vacation, which would avoid holding sessions to confirm members of his cabinet. / VOA
