Croatia's prime minister, Andrej Plenkovic, fired his health minister, Willi Beros, after he was arrested on suspicion of corruption. This development came as part of an investigation by the European Union.
“this morning, former Minister Berosh and two other individuals were arrested as part of an operation conducted by anticorruption officials”, Plenkovic underlined at a conference.
The head of the Croatian government was shocked by the idea that anyone in the health system could use the post for personal enrichment or to favour someone within the health system. The EU's Public Prosecutor's Office says it has investigated 8 people, including former Minister Beros and two hospital directors.
The suspects are charged with granting and accepting bribes, abuse of official office and money laundering”, read a statement. But Beross' defence attorney stressed that he denies any charges.
