The quake struck at 5:08 a.m. on Sunday morning, hitting 25 miles [25 km] west of Wellington at a focal depth of 20 miles [30 km].
GeoNet said that more than 37 thousand people had reported having felt the shake, some as far north as Auckland on the North Island.
