“Unions are facing continued attacks by government”

Naim Jakaj, senior researcher at the Kosovo Institute for Justice (IKD), during the presentation of the report “The absence of the Kolektive contracting fail to ensure social dialogue and collective protection of workers”, said unions are facing continued attacks by government. According to him, these attacks are affecting the destruction of social dialogue in Kosovo.

“instead of building faith with workers and supporting union co-operation, union representatives during this legislature have experienced and continue to experience continued public attacks by government leaders themselves, who, instead of encouraging dialogue, are displaying divisive and unsuitable approaches”, Jakaj said.

The IKD report also highlights the lack of an updated labour law since 2010 and failed efforts to adopt new laws in this area, making workers vulnerable.

Researchers Jakaj noted that the absence of a new law has created a climate of uncertainty for workers who are forced to seek their rights through often prolonged judicial ways.

The current labour law is insufficient to respond to new challenges in the labour market, and that is why today we have a large number of court cases from workers seeking justice for their rights”, he added.

According to Jakaj, more than 90% of the bills related to social protection of workers, scheduled for approval from 2021, have not been adopted, as they are: The Labour Bill, the Labour Inspectorate Bill, the Job Safety and Health Bill.

Kosovo Institute for Justice (IKD), along with the Union of Independent Trade Unions of Kosovo (BSPK) and the United Education, Science and Culture Union of Kosovo (SBASHK), with the support of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), on Tuesday (October 29th 2024) organised the disculator meeting and published the report: “The loss of the Koleve kovic contracts to ensure social dialogue and collective protection of workers”
