Former Kosovo Foreign Minister Petrit Selimi has voiced criticism of the Kurti Government for its diplomatic approach, especially the lack of diplomats at Kosovo embassies in major Western countries and the lack of progress in the international arena.
At FIVE of Dukagjini, Selimi stressed that for four years, Kosovo has not obtained new recognitions and has not joined any international organisation, viewing this period as a time of stagnation and diplomatic degradation.
We haven't had any recognition for four years. For four years we have had no membership in any international organisation. For four years we are the only state besides Russia and Belarus that are still in EU sanctions. Unfortunately for four years we have had very few official bilateral visits from the prime minister to Washington”, Selimi has said.
Selimi stressed that relations with major allies, such as the US, France and Germany, have deteriorated.
He cited criticism that has come from the State Secretary and State Department towards the current government, as well as threats of exclusion from the Berlin Process from Germany.
We've had a lot of tension, we've had severe criticism from the State Secretary, State Department towards us. We told you, Government, that you're naive. So we had a troubled relationship with America. Troubled relations with France and Germany. At one point came the time, which received threats from Germany, that we will expel you from the Berlin Process. These are not diplomatic victories, unless we are expelled. Diplomatic victory is progress, and not exclusion”, Selimi has added.
Another concern voiced by Selimi was the lack of necessary staff at Kosovo embassies in Washington and London, which, according to him, currently operate with only a few people, while the US Embassy does not even have drivers.
He stressed the great contrast with Serbia, which has 27 diplomats in Washington alone.
For now where we are, our diplomatic rub, our influence, our approach with our allies is at level, not catastrophic, but at minimum. Unfortunately, our diplomacy has improvised, I don't see any presence in Africa, Asia. So you remember earlier, you media attacked the foreign ministers why there is no recognition. It's the biggest count in newspapers and portals, so it's a month's recognition. Well, now no one's been mentioning it for four years without recognition, not recognition, but degradation our relationship with our allies...
I was in Washington a few weeks ago that our embassy had two three people, and there was no driver. Our embassy in London has two or three people. So. Kosovo has a total of 15 diplomats in the QUINT states, in 5 states. Serbia in Washington has taken 27 diplomats...”, Selimi has said among other things.
