The AGK further says the report also stresses developments that have been perceived as Government efforts to exercise control over the media.
This year's “Progress Report raises concerns about the instability of public broadcasters and the numerous resignations between directors and senior board members, stressing that the public broadcaster must quickly address concerns related to accountability and editorial independence”.
According to the AGK, in terms of attacks on journalists, the report stresses that it still remains a level of impunity, which is a serious concern for media freedom.
“Finally, the report points out that the Commission's recommendations from last year have not been implemented and remain valid”, said the AGK communiqué.
According to the Journalists' Association in next year, Kosovo should focus on the key recommendations of the Progress Report:
Improve the authorities' capacity to handle cases involving freedom of expression
Develop protocols and training for the protection and safety of journalists, including early warning mechanisms and rapid reaction;
Ensure the implementation of new Law for Independent Media Commission by harmonising it with EU acquis and European Standards
Review the Law for Radio Television of Kosovo for Sustainable Finance, preserving its independence.
For a free and independent media, implementation of these recommendations remains key to Kosovo's progress in European integrations.
