The group of seven more industrialized democracies includes the United States, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan. Representatives of the European Union also attended the talks in Naples. NATO as well as the defence minister of Ukraine.
Italy's Defence Minister, whose country holds the G7 chairmanship for 2024, Guido Cronetto, said that one of the strongest points of meeting in Naples was strong support for Ukraine, which is struggling to protect its sovereignty from Russian aggression.
“We unreservedly condemn Moscow's aggression, which has chosen to use force against a sovereign state and methods of hybrid war, as well as an irresponsible nuclear rhetoric”Italy's Defence Minister Guido Cronetto said.
The final statement read by the Italian chief of defence also stressed the strong support for Ukraine” while expressing concern for “intensification of military co-operation between China and Russia”, as well as the development of the North Korean nuclear programme.
This is the first case in G7 history that the meeting is dedicated to defence issues in a ministerial-level programme.
