In a joint statement, the four countries reaffirmed “the essential stabilizer” played by the U. NIFIL in southern Lebanon said the attacks should stop immediately.
Mission U n NIFIL, who includes hundreds of European soldiers, has been attacked by the Israeli army in recent days.
“We, the foreign ministers of France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom express our deep concern following recent IDF attacks on U bases NIFIL, which has left several peacekeepers injured. These attacks must be stopped immediately. We condemn all threats to the security of U NIFIL” says in the statement.
“Any intentional attack against U n NIFIL goes against international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Protecting peacekeepers is the task of all sides in conflict”.
Israel called on peacekeepers to leave their posts, where they have been deployed to maintain peace since the war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006, but they refused to do so, citing UN Resolution 1701 and the humanitarian needs of civilians in the south.
European countries' comments come today after another joint statement Friday from France, Spain and Italy, which expressed “affection for the attacks, writes Sky News.
