Great Britain and France have called an emergency meeting to the UN Security Council to discuss the humanitarian situation in Gaza and Britain is considering sanctioning two Israeli ministers, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said.
Reuters reports that when asked about the situation, Starmer said: “We are constantly having discussions on this with our partners. There's an urgent need, and this has been for a very long time for more help to go to Gaza”.
British Foreign Secretary David Lamie said in a statement that Israel must ensure that civilians are protected and the roads are open to allow for life's rescue and that the UN meeting will address these issues. He said Algeria had also joined the call for the emergency meeting, writes The Guardian, broadcast the Express newspaper.
Starmer also said Britain was considering the sanction of Israeli Finance Minister Bezale Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir on comments they had made about the conflict.
Former Foreign Secretary David Cameron was also reportedly considering the double sanctions before the Conservative Party at the time lost the elections in June.
Asked whether his government would sanction Smotric for comments that hungry civilians in Gaza could be justified and Ben-Gvir who has said that the authors of colon violence in the West Coast were heroes, Starmer said: “We are seeing this because they are undoubtedly disgusting comments”.
Israel must take all possible steps to avoid civilian casualties, to allow assistance in Gaza in much larger volumes and to ensure the ability of UN humanitarian partners to act effectively.
Along with France, Great Britain will call an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to address this.
