Austrian mayor shot dead, fugitive suspect still on the run

According to foreign media, Franz Hofer, the mayor of Kirchberg ob der Donau, was killed in Altenfelden, near the border with Germany and the Czech Republic.

A second man was also shot dead at a later time, Romanian Police spokeswoman Ulrike Handelbauer told CNN.

The suspect left the scene and a large-scale police operation with helicopters and special forces are under way, she said.

Unfortunately, we assume that the author we're looking for might be carrying the” gun, Handelbauer said, according to local media.

Police told CNN that the cause of the crime seemed to be a dispute over hunting rights.
