Heavy rains during Tuesday caused roads and cities to flood. Social media published images showed people trapped in floods, some climbing into trees.
Carlos Mazon, the regional chief of Valencia, told the press that some people are stuck in peaceful places.
“If [urgeon services] have not arrived, it is not due to lack of tools, but because of approach”, Mazon said, adding that reaching some areas is “completely impossible”.
Emergency services in the region called on citizens to avoid road travel and were asked to forward additional updates from official sources.
Train transport to the towns of Madrid and Barcelona has been cancelled due to floods, while schools and other essential services have been suspended in the most hit areas.
The Meteorological Institute of Spain, AMET, proclaimed red alarms in Valencia.
It seems that this is the largest death toll in Europe from floods from 2021 when nearly 200 people died, mainly in Germany.
Scientists say natural disasters in the region are being common because of climate change.
Meteorologists believe that the warming of the Mediterranean, which increases the evaporation of water, causes heavy rains to be much larger. / REL/
