The confirmation that Vladimir Putin will run for president again in 2024 was unexpected, but could there be any surprises next year in the war he started in Ukraine?

By March 15th the Russians go to the polls. Following this long conflict, it seems that both sides, like Russia and Ukraine, are handed over, following a high number of victims -- destruction of infrastructure, economic damage since the beginning of February 24th, which then escalated, causing catastrophic consequences.

Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymr Zelensky, maintain maximum-rated goals barring talks to end the war immediately.

Experts have said about Newsweek that fighting will likely continue until 2025.

Nothing can be expelled. The only way I can predict the war in Ukraine could end in 2024 is if Vladimir Putin dies,” told Newsweek Beth Knobel, professor of communication and media studies at Fordham University.

Russia's goal, meanwhile, remains not only to invade territories, they want to see a political regime installed in Kiev according to their demands, experts say.

At least, Putin will wait until November 2024 elections to see how everything will develop, as he also expects to see Donald Trump's election progress.

After Trump has often expressed his appreciation for Putin, calling him a very clever man.

“I believe that war can extend even in 2025 and international support for both sides will prolong the war, as neither Ukraine nor Russia can achieve major advances and announce victories,” Gok told Newsweek.

An American intelligence report found that Russia had lost 87 percent of its forces before the invasion, or 315,000 troops, and with renewed mobilization expected after elections showing Putin's willingness to sacrifice his people.

In December, it approved the expenses the army would have received about 30 percent of Russia's total budget in 2024.

Ukraine, on the other hand, may not have had flashy advances in 2023, but may show some benefits this year.

Kiev has recovered more than half the land Russia had seized since the start of the war in February 2022 and managed to free villages and towns in the south and east.

Despite Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Putin's closest ally in the EU, vetoed a $55 billion stand-by package from Brussels for Kiev in mid-December, support from other European allies has been strong.
