On Friday, the U.S. Navy warned U.S. flag ships to leave the area around Yemen on the Red Sea in the next 72 hours, as well as in the Gulf of Adden, while the United States and Britain launched numerous air strikes targeted by the Houth rebels.

The warning came after the latter (rebels Houthi) pledged strong revenge on Washington-led attacks, further increasing the possibility of a broader conflict in a region already involved in the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

The US Army and White House officials said they expected Houthi to retaliate. President Joe Biden likewise warned on Friday that the group could face further attacks.

The attacks led by the United States, which began in response to a campaign of intimidation and rocket attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea, killed at least five people and injured six others, according to the rebel group. The United States said the attacks, which took place in two phases, hit targets at 28 different locations in areas controlled by the Hawthi rebels in Yemen.

“We will make sure that together with our allies we respond to the Houthi group if they continue with this vicious behavior“, President Biden told reporters during a stop in Emmaus, Pennsylvania State.

Asked if he believes the Houthite group is a terrorist group, Mr. Biden said yes.

In November the White House announced that it was considering the possibility of redefining the rebel group Houthi as a terrorist organisation, while they began striking civilian ships. The Biden administration officially removed this group from the list of “foreign terrorist organisations” or “terrorists designated globally” in 2021, undoing a move by President Donald Trump.

Lieutenant General Douglas Sims said the new US attacks were generally carried out in areas with small populations, and that the number of those killed according to him would not be high. He said the attacks hit the group's weapons, radar and location, including remote mountain areas. / VOA
