US President Joe Biden said three members of the US Army were killed and the other “a host of” were injured in a raid on American forces, which are stationed northeast of Jordan, near the Syrian border.

While we are still gathering evidence of this attack, we know it was carried out by militant groups supported by Iran, which operate in Syria and Iraq”, Biden said through a statement on January 28th.

“We will continue their commitment to combat terrorism. I have no doubt, we will hold responsible those involved in the time and way we will choose”, the American president added.

Biden said the attack occurred in the late hours of January 27th. He did not specify the number of people injured in the incident, but an American official later said at least 34 personnel were evacuated after traumatic injuries in the brain.

A Jordanian television station quoted a government spokesman as saying the attack did not take place on Jordanian soil, but across the border to Syria.

These details could not be confirmed immediately.

Jordan is a close US ally in the Middle East, and the Pentagon has deployed nearly 3,000 troops in this state, often supporting operations in Syria.

In recent years, American troops have been active in Syria, fighting against Islamic State (IS) and other terrorist groups.

If confirmed that it took place in Jordan, then it would be the first attack American troops are targeted in this state since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas the Palestinian group declared a terrorist organisation by the US and the European Union in Gaza.

Many observers have expressed fears for expanding the conflict in the Middle East after the war began in Gaza, which was sparked by Hamas' attacks in southern Israel on 7 October.

As a result of Hamas' attacks, some 1,200 people were killed in Israel, while in Gaza by Israeli military offensives have been killed by over 26,000 Palestinians, according to local officials.

Because of Israel's support, US troops have been targeted by Islamic groups in the Middle East, including by the Huth rebels in Yemen, which are backed by Iran, and groups of militia in Iraq, which are also supported by Tehran. / REL
