US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Jim O'Brien said on Thursday that Kosovo and Serbia should refrain from provocative actions in northern Kosovo and commit to implementing commitments stemming from the process of talks on normalising relations between them.
He made these comets during an online conversation with journalists, positively assessing some progress, as was mutual recognition of the license plates between Kosovo and Serbia. He said he expects more discussions in the coming months about co-operation on issues related to the lives of citizens, while he expressed satisfaction with co-ordination of the Kosovo Police with the European Union's mission to rule of Law and NATO peacekeeping forces.
This is very important, especially after the events last September, when a group tried to import a large number of weapons that could cause great violence if they were allowed to bring their plans to an end. This is something both sides must understand that we will not be allowed”, he said.
Assistant Secretary O'Brien said the American stance has not changed in support of the process of talks on normalising Kosovo relations Serbia facilitated by the European Union, while calling on the parties to implement the pledges coming out of this process.
O'Brien already said that the United States will work with Serbia to address concerns about irregularities that emerged in the December 17th parliamentary elections, while stressing that they brought a change in the composition of the Serbian parliament, where parties that offered only nationalism failed to secure seats, while the opposition marked growth.
The US deputy secretary, who listed Kosovo as issues requiring more attention in the region, reaffirmed the American stance in support of Bosnia's entire land.
The Western Balkans must be European, stable and secure, and this above all implies that this region needs economic integration”, O'Brien said, stressing that the population of these countries is leaving because of the lack of economic future.
