According to Kosovo Police reports released after accidents, the most frequent causes leading to accidents are disrespect for communications signs, the failure to drive with road conditions and weather conditions, and the use of telephones during driving.

Over the 21 years, there have been 2 thousand and 573 accidents in Kosovo, and as a result, 2,000 and 930 people have died.

Automobile Races That Ended With Tragedy

Two weeks ago, on the night of December 16th, three young people were left dead as a result of an accident caused on the <x0th>Ibrahim Rugova” highway in Prizren.

The three dead were part of the organisation of the automobile race, which did not bring out winners, but Kosovo lost three citizens. At the moment of the accident, the victims have been watching the race.

After the accident, Kosovo Police have arrested two suspects due to the accident, currently in custody.

Regarding this tragic accident, Kosovo Police Director Gazmend Hoxha said during the last-year conference that the Unit for Highway Control this year has prevented 50 illegal races across the Kosovo region, and imposed 193 fines for contest participants.

He has talked about the most frequent cause of accidents.

The most frequent factors under police analyses are the failure to keep the safety distance between vehicles, unsafe vehicle manipulation, slow access to road conditions, disrespect of the crossing priority, unsafe road key, irregular alignment or changing strips and conversions - movement behind”, Hoxha has declared.

Measure severity warned for traffic offenders

Kosovo Interior Minister Xhelal Svecla, during the last-year conference, has warned toughness of measures for violators of regulations in traffic.

Svecla has said that through measures to be taken against violators, the move would also be to the point, as he has said, the neglect of police officials for prioritizing illegal races.

He has said that he has already been approved in the first reading of the Kosovo Assembly, the Law on Recking Measures for traffic violators, and is currently being examined through permanent commissions before second reading is adopted.

The minister has said that the new law, if adopted, envisions doubling fines, patenting and double points, and that the main burden would burden the owner of the car.

“Using technology we will penalise car owners, those cars that commit traffic violations, and the sentences will be automatically sent to owners”, Svechla said.

Kosovo's number of surrounding vehicles doubles

Police data shows that this year the number of surrounding vehicles in Kosovo has tripled.

In 2011, 189 thousand and 143 vehicles were registered. In 2022, however, this number has increased to 420,960 in circulation. This year, however, there were 442 thousand vehicles in circulation.

Meanwhile, during this year, according to police statistics of 3 million and 500,000 cars have entered and left Kosovo.
