Von Croamon: This Serbia cannot accept in the EU, choose Moscow or Brussels

If Serbia does not want to join the EU and instead prefer to feed its relations with Russia, the EU should not force it, said Eurodeput and rapporteur at the European Parliament for Kosovo, Violet von Cremon, in an interview for Euractiv, addressing the Albanian issue in southern Serbia [...]

“If Serbia does not want to join the EU, we should not force them. Perhaps they want to stay out and see how all other Western Balkan states become EU members. It is their decision”, von Cromon said. Von Croamon has also stressed the assistance the European Union gives to Serbia. “But to push and make offers to acterics, why does Serbia have greater interest in working with Russia”, she said.

The Eurodeput has taken to base Serbia's reports with Kosovo to testify that Serbia is not an appropriate place to work with in the EU.

But when it comes to Kosovo, I think now is the time to overcome this very, very aggressive, old rhetoric. With this, we cannot work together in the European Union, we cannot accept a country that still lives in the past, and still lives with these old Narratoria”, she explained. Von Croamon said she previously thought Serbia was interested in joining the EU and becoming an active player in the membership process, but recent events -- including worsening relations with Kosovo -- have cast doubts about this. “But we have to look and we have to appreciate that last month hasn't gone this way. And after a while, maybe we should take a break, the” she said. Von Croamon also noted the way Serbia treats journalists, media, rule of law and other issues. But the Eurodeput added there must be more criticism of Serbia, especially regarding the EU.

MEPs of the European Parliament have consistently called for Serbia to join the West and leave Russia in foreign policy. But Serbia has ignored these calls and in the current geopolitical situation it has intensified even more reports with Russia, which has not imposed sanctions as the states of the West have done. In the report to Serbia, Eurodeputs say accession negotiations with Belgrade should advance only if the country complys with EU sanctions against Russia and makes significant progress in EU-related reforms. Eurodeputs stressed the importance of harmonising with the EU's common foreign and security policy, especially in connection with Russia's fight against Ukraine.

The European Parliament is concerned about the recent decrease in public support for EU membership in Serbia, which they consider as the result of long anti-political rhetoric. The EU/pro-rus spread through government-controlled media and government officials. According to the report, this was the result of a major failure by government representatives to confront and reconcile Serbia's past. Eurodeputs want the EU to review its financial assistance move for Serbia if support for anti-democratic policies continues and urge the European Commission to ensure that all EU spending is fully in line with EU goals and strategic interests. /The Geopost
