The European Union has called for taking urgent steps to defuse the situation in Kosovo and has condemned the horrific terrorist attack on members of the Kosovo Police.
EU spokesman Peter Stano said in Brussels that the EU would refrain from praising events in northern Kosovo until all facts and evidence have been clarified. He said the EU could impose measures on Serbia, as towards Kosovo, if one is seen a reason for this.
EU spokesman Peter Stano said investigations into events in the northern part of Kosovo are continuing further along according to him, the clarifications of all facts and details of the terrible terrorist attack are made.
“... until all the facts and evidence have been clarified and eventually clarified, we will refrain from commenting on specific developments”
He reiterated the EU High Representative's statement, conveyed even in calls with Prime Minister Kurti and President Vuciq, for the powerful condemnation of the terrible terrorist “attack against Kosovo police members.” We need to find an exit route from the ongoing crisis and get back to the tracks of resolving the problem through dialogue. Stentos is urgently needed, as was said earlier, because we had a tense situation even days ago, even weeks ago. So, the EU was very clear when it comes to expectations on one side and the other, what they have to do in order to contribute to the reduction and return to the path of normal dialogue when we don't need to deal with crisis and dangerous situations as we see them now. And then we can help them move towards reconciliation and normalisation”, he said.
Stano said the EU, as if it has imposed measures on Kosovo, will also consider the possibility of measures against Serbia if it sees a reason for that.
“The EU has a very clear stance. The measures imposed on Kosovo and again these are not sanctions, and we do not use this terminology, so these measures have been put into place because of the inability of one side to meet the expectations for displacement. We said from the beginning and the EU was clear from the beginning, that these measures are temporary and they can either be reduced, depending on developments in the darkness, or on growing. Currently they have been imposed on Kosovo and it has been clearly said that if the EU sees the reasons they could also be placed to Serbia”, he said.
Stano said the path towards the EU for both countries is through dialogue, and both sides must meet their obligations to integrate into the EU.
