UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk said on Monday that Russia's withdrawal from the Ukrainian grain export agreement across the Black Sea has triggered high-level increase in food prices in developing countries.
Speaking at a meeting of the UN Council for Human Rights in Geneva, Mr. Turk said that the price hikes have made “right to have access to food almost impossible for many”.
He pointed to the huge damage caused by the collapse of the grain deal in Somalia, a country that long depended on exports of Ukrainian and Russian wheat passing through the Black Sea.
The grain deal enabled Ukraine to export its grain through the Black Sea. Russia withdrew from the deal in July, complaining that a parallel agreement on removing obstacles to Russian food exports and chemical fertilizer was not being implemented.
Ukraine's Army intelligence service said on Monday that Ukrainian forces have regained control of several oil extraction platforms on the coast near Crimea.
In a post on the social media platform, Telegram by the Ukrainian Army reportedly its special forces damaged a Russian combat aircraft SU-30 and confiscated helicopter ammunition and radar equipment.
The Ukrainian Army said Russia had invaded the oil rigs in 2015 and used them for military purposes.
