Maine's governor has declared a state of emergency due to the first hurricane in 15 years. He also sought federal assistance in preparing for Lee's arrival.
Winds are expected at speeds of up to 80 miles [130 km] an hour, accompanied by other rainfall.
A warning of tropical storms issued along the coast of New England spread north to the US and Canadian border, as well as to the Massachusetts coast, the centre of the hurricane said.
