A veteran US senator has temporarily resigned as head of the powerful Foreign Relations Committee of the United States Congress, as he is struggling with bribery charges.
Justice Department prosecutors claim Robert Menandez and his wife, Nadine Arslanian, have accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in exchange for aid to the Egyptian government. The couple have denied the accusations.
Menandez and his wife are accused of taking bribes... cash ready, gold bars, mortgage payments for a mortgage, and a luxury vehicle from three New Jersey businessmen.
The senator has rejected calls from democratic colleagues to resign as lawmakers and return the mandate to citizens of New Jersey, reports bc.
The majority leader in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, said on Friday that the Democrat senator had decided to step down as chairman of the committee “until the issue is resolved”.
The senator from New York said his colleague was “a dedicated public official and always fought hard for the people of New Jersey”.
