In Albania, the Special Court of Appeals today rejected another request by the elected mayor of Hymara, Fred Beler, for changing the safety measure against him.
Today's decision leaves Mr. Beler in custody again, who was arrested two days before the May 14th local elections under allegations of corruption in the elections.
Last week the Special Prosecution announced the outcome of the investigation and sending the case to trial, which has provoked a strong clash between Tirana and Athens. The Albanian prime minister has repeatedly stated that he cannot accept interference in the justice system.
Yesterday, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that “bilateral relations with Albania have been overshadowed by Fred Beler's detention case”.
