Russian troops have made no progress on the front line, but have taken good protective positions, making it difficult for Ukrainian troops to move east and south, Kiev authorities said Wednesday.
On the other hand, Russian troops have announced they have backed more than 12 Ukrainian attacks on the Donescu region, a key point of Russian advances for months.
Russia's military actions have focused mainly on air strikes against the wheat infrastructure at the Danube port city of Izzali, Ukraine.
Ukrainian forces launched a counteroffensive about two months ago for the release of conquered areas. Kiev says it has managed to free areas near Bakhmut, a town that came under Russian troops in May, after months of fighting.
Ukraine's Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Mailia said Russian troops “have consistently tried to prevent Russian forces' progress towards Bakhmut, but have failed to make it through”.
According to her, Russian forces are increasing reserves and equipment in three areas farther north, where severe fighting has been reported in recent weeks.
Russia's Defence Minister said Ukrainian forces had made unsuccessful efforts to advance in some areas in both the southern and northern parts of the Donnetsk region.
He also said Russian troops had carried out air strikes in cities around Bakhmut. / VOA
