The specialist refuses the request Jakup Krasniqi to be released in two weeks: Risk of Crime

Weeks ago, the defence of former Kosovo Parliament Speaker Jakup Krasniqi has demanded that he be released temporarily for a period of two weeks under surveillance, to spend little time with his family in Kosovo. But that request has been rejected by the Judicial Chamber in The Hague. So he has made known in one [...]

But that request has been rejected by the Judicial Chamber in The Hague. So she has announced in an answer to Teve1.info, spokeswoman for Kosovo's Specialised Chambers in The Hague, Angela Greep.

As she says, considering that Krasniqi's defense has already been disclosed to witness identities, therefore it must avoid risk “further committing crimes”.

According to Greep, the Judicial Chamber has also found that the risk of Krasniqi committing crimes “against those perceived as opponents of the KLA” still continues.

The trial “Krasniqi. In his reasoning, the Court emphasises the fact that the trial in this case has begun, that Krasniqi's defence has been disclosed to significant witness identities, and that for this reason any danger of further crime prosecution should be avoided. The panel found that the threat that Mr. Krasniqi will prevent the management of Special Court procedures and the risk of him committing further crimes against those perceived as opponents of the Kosovo Liberation Army, including witnesses who have offered or could offer evidence in the case and/or have to appear before Special Court”, Greep said.

“Panel found that only under communication monitoring, which applies to the Special Court detention building, Mr. Krasniqi could be limited in a way that would ease the risks of obstructing and committing further crimes, as well as of running, leading to the conclusion that the provisional release, limited by two weeks, would not change this score”, is further indicated in the response of the DHSK.

Through a request, Venkateswari Alagedra, the lawyer of former Kosovo Parliament Speaker Jakup Krasniqi, had said her defender is in custody for two years and eight months considered a long period and that the same poses no danger of escaping or obstructing judicial procedures.

The trial against Krasniqi and other former KLA leaders, Hashim Thaci, Kadri Veselin and Rexhep Selimi, who are charged by the Specialised Chambers and the Office of Specialised Prosecutor for War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity, has begun on April 3rd 2023.

In their first presentations at the Specialised Chambers in The Hague, they have been declared innocent.

They are staying in custody at The Hague since November 2020.
