The Dutch MP: Balkan States Must Make Hard Decisions Soon

The Dutch MP of the European Parliament, Thijs Reuten, believes preventative diplomacy guarantees stability in the Western Balkans region and offers opportunities for response to each eventual crisis. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, Reuten ) who is also a member of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee has commented on the appeal of dozens of American, British and European bloc deputies to have new access to Kosovo and Serbia, as they say, current policies are not functioning.

He believes that greater work must be done in access to Serbia.

Speaking of the recent appeal of US and European deputies to the top diplomats of the United States, Great Britain and the European Union to change access to Kosovo and Serbia, Reute, who is one of the signatories of the document, says everything they are looking for is a more balanced and proportional approach.

“I am extremely pleased with this initiative, because it is not only called around the Atlantic by MPs from 13 different countries with the initiative of the United States, Britain and Germany alike, but it is also a simple and clear call. All we're looking for is a more balanced and proportional approach. We're looking for two things: restoring negotiations for normalisation, and stabilising the region through a clear and coordinated approach and not as we've seen in the last few months, he says.

Reuten adds that a milder approach to Serbian President Vucinic should be put to an end.

The “should initially end the current approach, and this is primarily about soft access to Serbia's president, Aleksandar Vuciq, who in my opinion is affecting not only the affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, supporting Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik, but is also the obstacle to progress on the path towards normalisation of relations between Kosovo and Serbia, which is very necessary.

The other one, we need to be very clear from what we ask from partners throughout the region. The European Union must understand that the stability of this region is key to the stability of the entire continent. We cannot tolerate ourselves more wrongs and one thing we propose as MPs is preventative diplomacy”, he says.
