The chief engineer calls on the government to turn his eyes on Trepca: We're miserable.

Ibrahim Januzi of the Independent Trepca Workers Union has called on the Kosovo government to turn its attention to the Trepca Mine, as according to him, the situation is miserable. He has demanded that a special law be made for miners. The government has promised Trepca's investment and recovery during visits that [...]

The government had promised Trepca's investment and recovery during visits once made by Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Economy Minister Artane Rizvanolli. However, the situation on the ground, according to Januzi, is quite different from that this Government is not doing anything more than the past.

“We have been hopeful that the situation will improve, but the lack of capital investments and non-reformation of workers have made it difficult for us. We call on the Government from here too to look back at the miners, to Trepca. We're in miserable condition. I've been working for 12 years, and I haven't made any difference in this government since I've made it to KTV.

Minister Rizvanolli in February had indicated that they had received a 20m-euro loan for Trepca. But that money, as Januz said, still couldn't use it.

We've asked why we can use it, we're told we're in the process, we're in the process”, he added.

Januzi has said that the latest meeting with government officials is held in March, when they met Rizvanol's adviser. Since then, he says they have applied to meet again but have not received positive answers.

A miner lacks everything, starting with work clothes. In many cases, the equipment is paid by miners themselves. She lacks her first medical aid. We also lack air according to safety standards. There's a shortage of workers. The average age is too high, it spends 55 years. Last year alone, over 20 miners have been evacuated”, he said.

Trepca miners have been on short strikes this month because of the salary delay. According to Januz, the June salary has been taken in three installments.
