Major General Andrey Averyanov, who heads the GRU Secret Operations Unit, is said to be the successor of Yevgeny Pigozin at the helm of the Wagner Group. This is the man allegedly linked to the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Scripal and his daughter, who were found half dead on a bench in Salisbury, Britain in 2018.

Averyanov was seen in July at the Russian-Affrighted Summit, where he introduced himself to African leaders. Already, there are doubts that the Russian Lieutenant General will take office as head of the organisation on the African continent.

According to the conservative chairman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, Alicia Kearns, who spoke of iNews, General Aveyanov can lead Wagner and added that “Putin cannot afford to lose access to Africa's natural resources, because its wealth allows him to survive sanctions and finance Ukraine's illegal occupation<1>.

For its part, Emily Ferris from the Royal United Services Institute said that the Russian president may have “learned his teaching” as those with dangerous “ambicy” as Yevgeny Pigozin are “wild quacrets”. Any new Wagner leader is likely someone selected from the Kremlin”, he told the BBC.

Meanwhile, sources have confirmed in the Telegram that a possible takeover of Wagner by Averyanov is part of a Kremlin plan to end the Prigozhin influence in Africa in order to replace Wagner with a private company controlled by GRU.

This is unit 29155, which conducted operations in foreign territories at Putin's orders and is linked to many cases such as the poisoning of Sergei Scripal and his daughter in Salisbury, as mentioned earlier. At the same time, this particular group was allegedly ordered by Putin to organise a coup in Montenegro in 2015, which failed anyway.

The unit in question allegedly stands behind a destabilisation campaign in Moldova, as well as the poisoning of Bulgarian arms dealer Emilian Gebrev in 2015. It is noted that unit 29155 is known within Moscow as the “training center 161”, as are many future Russian spies trained under the direction of General Averyov.
