There were 23 staff members on board. Three of them have been confirmed dead, while five others have been transported to Darwin's royal hospital and are in serious condition”, an American Navy official said through a statement.
Australia's prime minister, Anthony Albanese, said the incident was “tragic”. The American butterfly reportedly crashed north of Australia while attending military training.
He said his government is focused on providing support.
Transmitter Sky News Australia reported that military carrier v-22 type Osprey, in which there were about 20 American marines, collapsed on Darwin's shores.
During a media conference, Albanese refused to give details about how the incident took place or about rescue efforts, which he said are taking place on Melville Island in northern Darwin.
Our “Pokus as Government and as the Department of Defence is to react to the incident and make sure that any necessary support is provided at this difficult time”, he said.
Albanese added that Australian personnel were not involved in the incident.
Northern Territory police announced earlier that they have responded to reports of a butterfly crash on the island of Meville.
The US and Australia have increased military co-operation in recent years.
Four Australian soldiers were killed last month during bilateral exercises after the helicopter on which they were traveling crashed into the ocean off the coast of Queensland.
