Albania takes Security Council presidency for second time

Albania will assume the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council on Friday, for the second time since it became part of this forum in January last year, as a non-permanent member. Foreign Minister Olta Dzacka said Thursday that two major activities would [...]

“We will organise a high-level Open Debat at the Security Council, which will focus on the consequences of illegal Russian aggression against Ukraine for peace and security in the world, as well as on joint efforts to strengthen and consolidate multilatheralism and respect for international law”, Mrs. Jaka said in a special message.

The Council meeting on this topic, which is scheduled to take place on September 20th, will be led by Prime Minister Edi Rama, while Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky is expected to be present. The issue of Ukraine and Russian aggression against it has been at the centre of Albania's activity at the Security Council, being also co-partisan with the United States. This “issue, in reality, has marked our mandate and has enabled Albania to gain the respect and admiration of partners and allies for the seriousness, professionalism and courage with which it has worked to uphold international law, the UN Charter, Ukraine and to condemn Russia”, said Mrs. Jakack.

Albania's second initiative is linked to an innovative platform intended to facilitate the access of businesses or corporations that offer their contributions, in cases of humanitarian crises around the world, but to ensure the rapid and effective distribution of these aides, whether in war situations or in natural disasters.

Our country, our team, has co-operated with a very serious group of major American organizations and corporations, to build a platform of co-operation that on one side will enable big businesses and corporations to offer their financial contribution, whether in goods or services, in humanitarian crisis situations, by creating synergy or by meeting existing humanitarian aid mechanisms, and on the other hand will improve and make more efficient the way these contributions are distributed, so that they go to the right place and at the right time where the need is realistic, where the British Council wants to lead this security session on September 14th.

The Albanian presidency of the Security Council coincides with a very active period of the United Nations Organisation when it meets and its general assembly, with the participation of leaders of member states. In the Assembly, Albania is expected this year to be represented by President Bajram Begaj.
