As the Northern Hemisphere sinks under a wave of record summer heat, much farther south, another terrible climate record is breaking. The ice in Antarctica has fallen to unprecedented low levels for this period of the year.
Each year, the ice in Antarctica shrinks to the lowest levels in late February during the summer of the continent. Then the ice rises again during the winter. However, scientists have noticed something different this year.
The ice has not been returned to expected levels, even at the lowest rate registered for 45 years. This amount of lost ice equals Argentina's size.
Fenomen has been described by some scientists as extraordinary something that is so rare that the odds are only once in millions of years.
Ted Scambos, a glacier at Colorado University Boulder, said that we should no longer be compared to the previous era.
“Loja has changed”, he told CNN. The “There is no point in talking about the possibility of happening as was the system, is clearly showing us that the system has changed. ”
Scientists are now trying to understand why.
