Why are temperatures so rushed, says climate expert

After weeks of rainfall and low temperatures, Kosovo has been facing a wave of heat and high temperatures, which, according to predictions by the Kosovo Hydrometeorology Institute this week, in urban countries, can reach as much as 40 degrees Celsius. According to climateology expert Bashkim Kastrati, the numerous rainfall and floods that occurred in Kosovo this year, and now high temperatures are the result of impacts of global climate change.

This year's “, left of summer in Kosovo, is supposed to be at temperatures above the multi-year average, but, for example, not in extreme values what other countries like Spain, Greece or Italy are facing. But, yes, the temperature in Kosovo is in the context of global growth trends and if we refer to the period 1991-2021, we see that there is an average increase of about 1 degrees Celsius, compared to 1960-1990”, he said.

In Radio Kosovo's Focus show, climateology expert Bashkim Kastrati said that as a result of climate change, floods have been frequented in Kosovo, while snowfall has decreased in winter as well as rain. Rainfall reductions should be seen with much concern, it's highlighted.

When compared with 1960-1990, with the period 1991-2021, it is estimated that rainfall has decreased by about 7.6 percent. That may seem to be a small figure, but I am concerned with this reduction of rainfall, given the fact that Kosovo has few water-accusing sites. Kosovo has scarce water resources. We have to worry about the lack of water, as a society, and we have to make sure that one day we don't face his gross lack of”, he said.

In addition, on the Focus show, Kastrati said Kosovo must make environmental policies that would precede adoption with climate change. In this direction, Kosovo has taken a good step forward, with the adoption of the Strategy for Climate Change, with the steps to be taken in order to preserve the environment, Kastrati points out. /rtk
