United Kingdom Prime Minister Richie Sunak has expressed particularly concerned about the situation in Kosovo”, when asked by MP Alicia Kearns for “international failure” in the Western Balkans.
Alicia Kearns, British MP and chairman of the British Parliament's Foreign Policy Commission, has asked the country's prime minister whether he will make a commitment to expanding KFOR's mandate in Kosovo so that the peacekeeping mission NATO is also dealing with illegal weapons, which it said were coming from Serbia to Kosovo.
Speaking of a “international punishment” in preventing the situation in Kosovo, Kearns said that “this is best reflected by the EU and US response and Kosovo's recent penalties in the face of Serbian antagonism and Dodik's Secetismist rhetoric in Bosnia and Herzegovina”.
“As prime minister, will you know how to engage for us to join EUFOR, where I would add how Turkey and Chile are members, and would you also consider lobby for an extension of KFOR's mandate in Kosovo so that they can deal with illegal weapons being sent from Serbia to Kosovo, which are being illegally financed by Belgrade and armed with militias in Kosovo?
In response, the British prime minister said he condemned the unprotested attacks on KFOR members in the north, while showing they have called on Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq to reduce tensions and prevent violence.
The first thing to say is that we and the Government fully support Bosnia and Herzegovina's territorial integrity and sovereignty and will continue to take measures against those who threaten it. We are particularly concerned, I am particularly concerned about the situation in northern Kosovo, which you know and condemn many attacks by protesters on KFOR personnel. The foreign secretary has already told Kosovo and Serbia's prime minister that leaders in Belgrade and Pristina have the responsibility to lower tension and prevent further violence”, said Rishi Sunak.
Question to Join EUFOR, which is the international mission responsible for implementing the military part of the Dayton Agreement, Sunak said that the non-recognition of the United Kingdom to “does not reflect the importance of the operation for peace and stability of the region”.
Our view is that we need to find a way back to the EU-launched dialogue. Regarding EUFOR, we see EUFOR as vital to peace and security in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Our participation in it does not reflect the importance of the operation for peace and stability in the region, and we are trying to continue to explore opportunities to expand co-operation with the” mission, Sunak said.
MP Kearns finally called on the British government to closely pursue this situation. She thinks the United Kingdom should join the EU and extend KFOR's mandate in Kosovo, saying that we are “in the era of Pre-Special Diplomacy”. It says that “the time to protect stability is now” and that “the loss is not escalation”.
